Because you already keep the memories.
The ultrasound pictures.
The hospital bracelet.
The baby book documenting the first time rolling over.
The locket of hair.
The tooth that hung on for a week longer than it should have.
The stick-figure picture of her family she proudly asked to hang on the fridge.
We are hoarders of memories.
We all have a shoe box, or a rubbermaid container, or a bottom dresser drawer like my Mom had when I was growing up, and like I now have. It’s our special little space that serves as a time vault of sorts. It allows us to squirrel away the things we can’t quite figure out what to do with, but that we know we can’t bear to toss in the trash. Because every so often we need to pull open that bottom drawer and feel the ‘things’. For me it’s the letter my husband wrote me when he proposed, my Dad’s obituary that I clipped from the newspaper over 10 years ago, the expired passport that is filled with stamps from adventures of when I felt carefree, the sand from the beach where we said our vows, the picture of my daughter wearing a giant sombrero as she sits atop a donkey with a smile plastered on her face. I hold it in my hands, close my eyes and simply remember when.
We know in our heads these moments in time existed, but the need to have that memory legitimized with something tangible is a strong one. The memory fades, the moments blur and the details disappear, but the physical reminder can be the jolt we need to bring things back into focus.
Photographs matter. They are the validation that fill the gaps. They are the documentation that allow you to pass down the story.
Documenting your life, right now, matters. One day those images will be in your child’s bottom dresser drawer and she’ll hold the pictures in her hands, close her eyes, and remember when.
Are you ready to document your life, just as it is right now? To pass the memories down to your children? Send me a quick note and we’ll chat about what is special to you in this very moment, and how we can make it into art for you.
