One of my favourite aspects of photographing in the style I do is that I’m able to travel incredibly light. I think sometimes when you think of a photographer you imagine lights, backdrops, tripods and reflectors…and, yes, some photographers DO use all of those things, but not me. When it comes to my photography, I’m a minimalist and carry with me great gear, but not a ton of it. I’ve chosen gear that’ll allow me to switch rooms and lighting scenarios on a dime and that will also allow me to squeeze into corners and behind furniture or to get up high in your home.

The things I carry with me vary slightly between in-home newborn and family sessions, but most of the core items stay the same.

When I arrive at your home you’ll see me walk in my with my camera bag and my trusty stool. I joke that my stool goes everywhere with me, but really…it does! It lives in the back of my car and only comes out when I need to do a big Costco run!

Inside my camera bag I have:

• 2 Nikon D750 camera bodies
• a Nikkor 24-70 2.8 lens
• a Nikkor 24mm 1.4 lens
• speedlight (on-camera flash) which I rarely use but always have just in case
• at least 6 memory cards (2 in each camera and 2 extras, although I usually have more)
• 3 camera batteries (1 in each camera and an extra)
• lens pen and cloth to clean my lens
• my phone
• water bottle
• business cards

If it’s a newborn session I’ll also toss in a plain diaper (a diaper without prints is great for simple portraits) and a few swaddle options (we usually use yours, but it’s nice to have a few just in case). If I’m heading to a family session with young kids or a newborn session with siblings, then I’ll generally stash away a few candies in my bag that I can pull out if we need to.

For sessions that are out and about I don’t bring my stool and just toss my camera bag on and head out with you!

That’s it!

Over the 5 years I’ve been in business I keep continually editing my camera bag and now really only bring the things I know I’ll use or that I need just in case some of gear malfunctions (hence 2 camera bodies). It’s so nice to be able to work light and to know that I am able to pick up my gear and do whatever you’d like during your session, even on a whim.
