I shot my first Day In The Life this past June as part of a photography workshop. I was instantly hooked and then did another one in July with the intention to keep doing it once a month. Best laid plans, right? It took me until November to gather up the gusto to take on another Day In The Life – my first since Willa was born. Shooting our whole day this time felt like it was about a thousand times harder than the other two. I think there was a multitude of factors involved, but the main thing is that I have a baby attached to me for a good portion of the day, which means my hands are not nearly as free as I’d like to carry my camera around. I was tempted to switch over to my iphone for the later half of the day, but I knew I’d be mad at myself for doing so, so I stuck it out.
This was a pretty ordinary day in our lives. My husband started a new job and is working really long hours right now, so I wanted to document what a typical day looks like for me and the girls. The day I picked ended up being really cloudy and dreary, but we made the best of it. It might seem like a pretty boring day right now, but I know years from now when I look back on this, I will be so happy to have these little glimpses of our life (even if I look really tired!).
This day started around 7:45. My husband was already gone and I could hear Finley playing in her room, so it was time for me to get up.
In the 5 minutes it took me to make coffee, Finley had emptied the junk drawer onto the kitchen table. She requested that I build her a rocket ship from this random assortment of things. I tried my best. The batteries actually made quite good rocket blasters 🙂
A few minutes later I hear Willa. She’s awake and hungry!
Finley plays some games while I feed Willa and then the two of them hang out together while I get a few things done around the house.
The breakfast request this particular morning was for egg sandwiches. I usually convince her that oatmeal is quite sufficient, but today I gave in. And yes, I totally over cooked the eggs while I was busy taking pictures of them.
Time to get the girls dressed. Willa is up first. Please no judging on the half empty gallery wall. I will order those prints one day!
We head down to the living room to play. Our mornings are really relaxed and they usually involve quite a bit of dancing, running around, and playing with Willa. The current favourite activity is to dance a ring around Willa while having music from the Tinker Bell movie blasting. (I hear the songs in my sleep…)
Willa is hungry again, so I get a break from the Tink moves.
Today is a preschool day for Finley, so I get organized and get her lunch ready for her so that we can be out the door on time.
Finley is dropped off and Willa is asleep in the carseat so I take the opportunity to pick up my treat for the day.
Willa is still sleeping so I toss in a load of laundry and attempt to tidy up.
My Mom came over to watch Willa for a bit, so I was able to walk to pick Finley up from preschool. It’s winter around these parts, but we still try to walk to preschool as often as we can.
A little bit of hot chocolate to warm up after our walk. Finley slept over at my Mom’s house this night, so we pack her bags and she says goodbye.
The house is quiet so I spend a few minutes working on my website. Our days are pretty short right now, and it’s dark by around 5pm. I’m still working on that Starbucks from hours ago – I get distracted easily.
We are waiting for my husband to get home before eating dinner, so I take the time to have a quick shower. Willa hangs out on her play mat in the bathroom while I shower.
And with that I call it a day! There is still dinner left to eat (we ate take out) and putting Willa to bed, but you’ll have to just imagine those.
