One of my favourite things about photographs is their ability to visually track time and progress. A single moment is great, but what’s even better is seeing that same moment over the years. Watching kids grow. Watching adults age (it’s a privilege!). Seeing what changes.

My most treasured series that I do is the girls and my husband blowing out the candles on his cake each year. I don’t often say “wait, you have to stop so I can grab a photo!”, but during this moment each year, I do just that. We’re going on 8 years and I hope that my family will humour me for many more years to come.

Here are a few ideas for you to get started with your own photo series this year:

• A day in your life (once a month, or once a week, or once a year).
• Photograph your kids on their birthdays at the time they were born.
• First/last day of school.
• Document a certain time of day for a specific amount of time (bedtime once a week, before breakfast for the first month of school, while kids sleep every year on their birthday, dinnertime with everyone at the table every Sunday night).
• 25, 30, or 100 days of…(Christmas, thankfulness, summer, your kids, your spouse, you).
• Document a relationship (sisterhood, parenthood, kids with pets).
• Your whole family in the frame (selfie against a white wall once a month, on your front steps every Monday, etc).
• Cook one meal/item each week that’s photography worthy, then photograph it.

Whatever it is, have fun with it! Then, remember to print those photos. These series make great little Chatbooks that your kids can look through over and over again.
