In the newborn photography world, there’s often a large distinction between in-home lifestyle newborn photo sessions and more posed studio sessions. I really do think both are lovely options and each have their plusses and minuses, but for me, in-home sessions have a special uniqueness that studio sessions can’t replicate.
Here are my 5 reasons newborn photos in your home rock:
You just had a baby! Especially in the winter, getting ready to go out, bundle everyone up, and load into the car isn’t an easy task. With in-home sessions I do the driving and come to you, you get to roll out of bed, have a quick shower and get ready, and then I’ll be there to do the rest.
Making the photographs in your home means that your newborn photos aren’t going to look like anyone else’s. I don’t use a cookie-cutter posing formula or standard backdrops (or any backdrops at all!), and instead, we incorporate your style and decor into your photo session. Also, each house has different windows and different types of light, which means that your home can actually dictate the the feel of the photographs. Have a light and airy style with light flooding in? Your photos will most likely be filled with beautiful bright light. Live in an older home with lovely nooks and crannies and secret little pockets of light? I’ll find that light and exploit it, and your photos will have that cozy feeling that your home has.
If you have other children, then you probably already know that a new baby can rock their world. Often schedules are thrown out of whack, behaviour changes (sometimes in a really good way!) and adjusting to a new sibling can taking a bit of time. The beauty of an in-home session is that while older siblings aren’t in the photos (we tend to do sibling photos first), they can do other things that make them happy such as eating a snack, playing trucks, watching tv, running in the yard and jumping on the bed. It takes so much of the pressure off of ‘smile and pose’ and makes kids much more relaxed as they have time to release their energy.
This might sound silly, but after doing this for years, I have seen the power that coffee and music can have on a session. I always recommend that parents brew a fresh pot of coffee (or tea) and turn on their favourite playlist. There’s something about having a hot steaming mug in hand and your favourite song playing that takes all the pressure off.
My kids love hearing stories about when they were little. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve told my girls their birth stories – they ask almost every night at dinner! It’s special to have a visual record of that time to show your kids what their home look like when you brought them home. How you painstakingly hung that gallery wall or painted those stripes on the wall. Before you know it, your kids will be asking for a princess or ninja room and the baby nursery will take on a different form.
Ready to book a photo session in your home? Send me a note and we’ll chat about what’s most important to you and your family to have documented from this special time.
P.S. One of the other amazing reasons in-home sessions rock is because you get to have your pets in the photos.
