During a family or newborn photo session, we’ll talk about all sorts of things:

• your life
• your kids
• the last vacation you were on (side note: just close your eyes and imagine the beach you’ll be sipping a margarita on after this mess of 2 years)
• your jobs
• the beautiful decor in your house (I likely don’t even know you yet, but I know it’s niiiiiice)
• your favourite coffee shop

Those types of topics are what feel natural, what happens spontaneously in the moment (ya, we’re living spontaneously now! 💃), and my goal with chatting naturally is that our session will feel much more relaxed and much less like you’re on display.

So! I’ve told you what you WILL likely hear from me.

But what about the things you’ll never hear come out of my mouth?

Here they are!

“SAY CHEESE“

Who came up with this???? I’d like to have a word with them.

Do you want to know what happens when you tell someone (especially a tiny human) to “say cheese”?

That’s not what you want to see in your final gallery of images, right?

Instead, it’s my job to wait for the moment and capture the natural smile.

“OOPS, I MISSED IT“

I’ll just toot my own horn here and tell you that it’s super rare that I miss a moment. More often, you’ll view your final gallery and wonder how I managed to even catch the moment you didn’t think I’d noticed.

Yes, sometimes it does happen, but I won’t tell you that I missed it and that you have to do it all over again! I’m a bigger fan of waiting for it to happen naturally again, or gently suggesting that maybe you’d like to keep kissing your baby or keep spinning your kiddo around in circles. Not into it? Your kid has moved on? No problem. We move on, and I can promise you that more amazing moments will happen all on their own.

“Your kids are too rambunctious for this.”

One of the biggest things I hear from prospective clients is, “I am really not sure my kids can handle a 2 hour photo session. They don’t sit still.”

I have kids. I am WELL aware they don’t sit still. They’re tornados on legs.

The true magic of the photo sessions I do is that there is ZERO expectation for your kids to sit still.

Seriously. I’ve done sessions where I chase toddlers around for 2 hours and the photos are still 😍.

I bet you’ve seen images of mine with a whole family sitting on a bed and thought to yourself, “that’s cute…..my kid would never sit there and cuddle”.

Can I tell you a secret? 🤫

Most of the kids in the photos you see haven’t sat there calmly the whole time. We’ve done a bunch of fun activities, they’ve sat for 36 seconds and I’ve captured that moment. Sometimes it takes a few times of a kid jumping on the bed 10 times and then sitting for 10 seconds to get the shots we need. It is never 15 minutes of straight sitting.

Your kids are not too rambunctious and you totally can do a 2 hour family photo session with kids of any age….because this isn’t like any photo session you’ve had in the past.
