Shall we have a serious moment of truth today?
I’ve struggled with my body for as long as I can remember.
I fought against it from the moment it became a conscious thought in my brain.
I ate plain tuna and rice for meals on end. I exercised for hours. I drank more water…..less water….lemon water.
I tried to make it into something it wasn’t and I was often so frustrated in the process.
Then, that same body carried 2 babies.
And the majority of the time, while I was pregnant, I felt so unlike myself that I couldn’t comprehend it.
My once strong body was now in constant pain.
The weight didn’t fall off as everyone promised it would.
The thought of focusing on myself became overwhelming and felt selfish.
The scale said the same number as a few years before, but yet, nothing fit.
And then, somewhere within all of those swirling feelings, I also became a million and one things to everyone else and lost who I was before I was a mother.
As I grow older (and my kids grow older), I can now say that I’ve become much more comfortable in my own skin. That isn’t to say that I embrace it all or don’t have insecurities (oh, I do!), it’s more that I’ve finally figured out what I love about my body and have worked on loving that part of it.
One of the biggest ways that I’ve helped myself come to this realization is through self-portraiture. For 2 years now, I’ve taken at least one self-portrait a week. Some are of me doing everyday tasks, some are headshots, some are boudoir….every week is different. This incredibly personal project has forced me to confront my body head-on and to realize that I don’t have to fight it all the time. That I can love certain aspects of it.
It’s still very much a work in progress, but having myself reflected back in the form of photographs has been one of the most empowering things I’ve done for myself.
I’ve spent the last 6 years finding beauty in the mundane, everyday moments for the families who have been gracious enough to invite me into their homes and have been brave enough to share a small slice of time with me. Small homes, large homes, small families, and large families, I can assure you that within every single family unit there is an incredible amount of beauty. And yet, sometimes it takes someone else to show it to you in a different way in order for you to realize it – to reflect it back at you so that you can really see it.
Throughout my time working with families, I’ve had countless conversations with mothers about how life changes after babies. Your body is different, your mind is different, your priorities are different. You are different.
You’re a million things to a million different people and the woman you used to be feels like she might not be reachable any longer. I’ve been there – I 100% get it.
But here’s the thing: she’s still there.
Underneath it all is a woman who deserves to be seen. The covetable, sultry you who needs to escape once in a while.
This is a session all about you for you. It’s a way to pay tribute to yourself and the strength you have within, even if you don’t feel it every day as you pull stray Cheerios out of your hair and put on mismatched shoes (it’s ok, we’ve all been there!).
This Black Friday, in the middle of buying a zillion gifts for your kids, your husband, the teachers, the house cleaner, the Fed Ex guy, the daycare workers and the dog walker…..this one is for you. Because you deserve it.
