I have a serious love of combining old and new. My house is evidence of that – my walls are lined with vintage photos and mementoes combined with images I’ve made within the last year, and seeing my family’s history sitting right next to my own kids makes my heart happy.
The love of combining old and new runs through into my way of photographing newborns. One of my favourite things to do during a newborn session is to figure out how to incorporate a family heirloom into a session in a way that still makes the photograph feel fresh and modern.
Prior to each newborn session, I meet the family in their home and we chat about the session, what to expect and how to prepare. One of the questions I always ask is if there are any family heirlooms or special objects the family would like to incorporate into the session. It can be anything from an old bassinet to an antique quilt to a book you read to the baby while pregnant to a vintage piano. If it has some sort of a story or memory, then I’m happy to make sure we use it as part of the session.
After chatting, I then go home and think about ways that I can incorporate that object into my style of photography – meaning it’s not too stuffy and still feels modern.
I love how special these photos become – full of nostalgia. It’s also a really fun way that we can start a series with siblings – having each baby in the family photographed using the same heirloom or object.
I also love incorporating special little objects because it makes each and every session unique. The last thing I want is for each session I do to follow a formula or feel repetitive. Yes, there are always some go-to shots that I love getting of every baby, but once those are covered off then I really like getting creative and making creative images.
Are you pregnant? Interested in chatting about how we can make your newborn photos uniquely yours? Drop me a line today! I’d love to hear all about your story.
