The truth is that every time another photographer asks me to photograph her own family I have an internal freak out. How can you not? I sweat a bit, self talk a lot and attempt to talk myself out of it quite a few times. When I first started taking pictures of my own daughter, which then turned into a passion, and then a business, I never could have imagined I’d be hired by my own peers! That was just total crazy talk! Yet, here I am, and although I still freak out, I am so, so honoured each and every time another photographer trusts me with their memories.
When Candace from Candace Flynn Photography sent me an email saying that she was pregnant with her fourth baby and asked if I’d be willing to do their newborn photos in their Sherwood Park home, I was ecstatic (ok, ecstatic after the freak out described above!). I’m mostly hired by first time parents, or families with one other child, so to be able to do a newborn session with THREE (!!!!) older siblings had me so crazy excited for the potential.
When 4 kids are involved, there’s nothing you can do except go with the flow, so it’s a good thing that that is what I already do while making newborn photos. I take all of my cues from the baby and siblings, and we sort of just float through the house capturing beautifully real moments as we go.
When I arrived, baby Rome had just finished nursing so I brought her up to the master bedroom for a few solo portraits.
And then her siblings joined in…some kiddos were more calm than others! (Let’s not say that I encouraged this jumping, ok?)
Once the jumping started, it continued in the next room.
Mom had to multi-task and kiss a few boo boos better. If you’re a mom of more than 1 kiddo, you know this is real life right here!
Energy released, everyone gathered on the bed for a few minutes of cuddles.
We then headed downstairs for some book reading and a wardrobe change.
After sitting for a few minutes, hot chocolate was requested, so everyone moved to the kitchen. This really is the beauty of a lifestyle newborn photo session – we can do whatever happens to be requested at the time. Going into this session I didn’t expect to be photographing marshmallow Peeps, but I love how it adds uniqueness to the photo session. (Plus, who can resist Peeps!?)
Right as we were wrapping up the session Mom and Dad asked if they could do a few photos with just them and little Rome. YES!!
I was standing on a stool to get the above photo (I bring a stool with me to every session), and after I stepped off and was packing up my gear, Rome’s big brother asked if he could stand on the stool to take photos too. He grabbed a nearby iPhone and was taking his job very seriously. It was my absolute favourite part of the session. Those little eyes are always watching what we do!
If you squint really hard you can even see me in this picture. 🙂
Thank you Candace & Brandon for inviting me into your home to capture these memories for you!
